February

February in Wisconsin can be a rollercoaster—frigid temps, unexpected warm-ups, and plenty of snow and ice. While we're all dreaming of spring, now is the perfect time to tackle a few home maintenance tasks that will help protect your home through the rest of winter (and beyond).

Here are a few simple but important things to check off your list this month:

1. Check Your Roof for Ice Dams

If you've lived in Wisconsin long enough, you know ice dams are no joke. They form when warm air from your home causes snow on the roof to melt, only for it to refreeze at the edges, creating a dam that traps water. This can lead to serious (and expensive) water damage inside your home. If you notice icicles forming or suspect an ice dam, don't try to chip away at it yourself—call a professional to safely remove it and prevent future buildup.

2. Inspect Caulk & Grout

Cold weather and dry indoor air can cause caulk to crack, making your home more susceptible to water damage and mold growth. Take a few minutes to check the grout around sinks, tubs, and showers. If you notice gaps or crumbling areas, reapplying caulk is an easy and affordable fix that helps keep moisture where it belongs.

3. Touch Up Interior Walls & Doors

With shorter days and more time spent indoors, winter is the perfect time to freshen up your walls. Scuffs, dings, and fingerprints seem to multiply during the colder months—especially in high-traffic areas. A quick cleaning and a little touch-up paint can make your home feel refreshed without a major project.

4. Deep Clean Your Garbage Disposal

Ever notice a funky smell lingering in your kitchen? Your garbage disposal might be the culprit. Over time, grease, food scraps, and grime build up inside. An easy fix? Scrub it out with dish soap and hot water, then run a mix of ice and coarse salt (like Kosher or rock salt) through it to break up gunk and keep the blades sharp. Follow it up with a rinse of cold water, and you're good to go!

Stay Ahead of Home Maintenance

Taking care of these small tasks now can save you from bigger headaches later. A little maintenance goes a long way in protecting your home, and by staying on top of things, you'll be in great shape once spring finally rolls around.
